History of NMHR

Few years ago, psychiatrists in the Ministry of Health Malaysia had agreed that there is a need for setting up of a National Registry for Mental Health (NMHR).

  • The aim of this undertaking is to ensure that accurate information is readily available and accessible in a timely manner throughout the mental health sector.

  • In addition to that, it would help to improve the mental health status of Malaysian through effective use of information in the planning of mental health services for this country.

  • After all those hard work, NMHR was finally operated on 1st January 2003

  • During the initial phase, CRC has played an important role in technical aspects.

The objectives of the NMHR are:

  • To determine the desease burden attributable to mental disorders by quantifying its morbidity, and its geographic and temporal trends in Malaysia.

  • To identify subgroups in the population at high risk of mental disorders to whom prevention effort should be targeted.

  • To identify potential risk factors involved in mental disorders.

  • To evaluate the treatment, control and prevention of mental disorders.

  • To stimulate and facilitate epidemiological research on mental disorder, e.g generating hypotheses on etiology.
